SHIRLEY NELSON
Shirley Nelson, 83, of Hart, Texas, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018, in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Service was Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hart with Rev. Donna Lindley, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Hart, and former FUMC-Hart pastor Rev. Tom Long of Midland, officiating. Burial followed at Hart Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Family and friends visitation was Friday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Shirley was born July 15, 1934, in Tulia, Texas, to Charlie and Ruby (Broughton) Sims. She had been a resident of the Hart community since 1952. She graduated from Tulia High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter married the love of her life, David Nelson, on September 4, 1952, in Oklahoma. Shirley and David farmed in Hart and Shirley continued to farm up until her death; she also had been the bookkeeper for the farm, retiring at age 70.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hart, where she had taught Sunday School. She was a longtime member of the Hart Golden Group. Shirley enjoyed fishing and traveling with her son, Vic and daughter-in-law, Dana, as well as doing needlepoint, gardening and landscaping. She hardly ever missed a Lady Raider Basketball game. Her greatest enjoyment of all was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
Those left to cherish Shirley’s memories are her two daughters, Cathy Garner and husband Mike of Plainview, and Lisa Kiernan of Dallas; a daughter-in-law, Dana Nelson of Amarillo; her sweet dog, Abel; five grandchildren, Brian Nelson, Brady Nelson and his wife Ann, Kevin Drewry, Matt Kiernan and Amy Kiernan; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Garnett, Braden Nelson, Maggie Nelson Miles Nelson and Mary Nelson; and one great-great-grandchild, Karsyn Garnett.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Nelson; her son, Vic Nelson; and three brothers, Kenneth Sims, Neil Sims and Gene Sims.
