Jim Brooks
CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO—Former Hart resident James (Jim) Oscar Brooks, Sr, 99, of Clovis, New Mexico, passed away March 31, 2015.
The family will receive visitors at 9:45 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Steed-Todd Funeral Home. The service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Steed- Todd Chapel with John Tanner officiating. Interment will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Jim was born March 8, 1916, to Harmon and Ruth Brooks in Hope, Arkansas. He moved as a child with his family to Dawson County, Texas, from Arkansas. He attended McCarty School (Dawson County).
He married LaVaughn Glaze in 1939 in Lamesa, Texas. They farmed in Dawson County, Texas, before moving to Hart, Texas, in the early 1950s, where they lived and farmed until they moved to Clovis in 1963 to farm. LaVaughn died June 14, 1978, in Clovis.
He married Doris Thompson in 1980 in Clovis. After Doris’ death, he later, he married Melva Thrasher in 1997.
Jim was a Mason, Deacon of Baptist faith, a Boy Scout leader, a mentor of several young people and a Sunday school teacher.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Brooks of Hart; two sisters, O’deall Snell and Faye Snell, both of Ackerly, Texas; his first wife, Thelma LaVaughn; second wife, Doris Elizabeth; his love and companion, Melva in 2015; a son, James Oscar Brooks, Jr., who died in 2009; and a daughter-in-law, Billie Brooks;.
Jim is survived by his other children, LaWanda (Glenn) Wilson of Canyon, Texas; Wilburn (Stephenie) Brooks of Clovis; Stanley Brooks of Clovis, Elgin Brooks of Clovis; daughter-in-law, Ramona (Danny) Brija of Clovis; his caregiver, Roxanne; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Jim’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers; his granddaughters will be flower bearers; and the honorary bearers are all close friends and family.
