Shirley Barnes
Shirley Barnes, 82, of Lubbock, former longtime Hart resident, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017, in Lubbock. Funeral services were March 28, 2017, beginning at 10 a.m. in First Baptist Church in Hart with longtime family friend, Pastor Les Reed of Crosbyton, officiating, assisted by Pastor Gene Meacham, minister of First Baptist, Hart. Graveside services were at 3 p.m. at Childress Cemetery in Childress. Arrangements were handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.
Shirley was born in Childress on January 5, 1925, to Donald and Laura Carl Crook. She graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock with a bachelor’s degree and later earned her master’s degree from then West Texas State University.
She married Frank Barnes on June 22, 1957. She taught business in Hermleigh, Texas, for 13 years. In 1969, the family moved to Hart where Shirley taught English. She later became a Certified Public Counselor and worked for Hart ISD and Nazareth ISD. She retired in 2000. Shirley touched the lives of many students and their families.
She was an avid Texas Tech fan and held season tickets to many sporting events there. She loved following her grandsons’ activities and was always a part of their lives. She was the youngest of eight children and very devoted to her large family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hart and a member of Castro County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Brad and Karen Barnes of Hart; her daughter, Lori Ann Barnes of Grapevine; her son and his wife, Clay and Hunter Barnes of Las Vegas, Nevada; her three grandsons, Tim Barnes and wife Mallory and son Luke of Lubbock, Trevor Barnes of Slaton and Trent Barnes of Houston; three sisters, Mildred Allen of Denton, Jo Thomas of Lubbock and Lois Smith and husband Dean of Moore, Oklahoma; and a brother, Don Ray Crook of Childress. She has many nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Barnes; a sister, Maxine Gale; two brothers, Jay Malloy and Harold Malloy; and her parents, Donald and Laura Crook.
